When the lamps arrive the switches will very likely be in the off position (see picture below). To turn the lamp on firstly plug it into the outlet and make sure you turn the lamp on (press the bottom half of the switch down) Once the lamp is plugged in and the switch is in the on position, you can touch the base of the lamp.
